HOW I MET MY HUSBAND & A TIMELINE OF ‘US’
Myself and my husband Chris have been married since February 2016. We got engaged in March 2015 and met in October 2014, so our relationship was a bit of a whirlwind, but we’re rock steady and have been married for a while now, so it wasn’t an issue for us. Here’s how we met and how our relationship progressed.
6th October 2014
Picture the scene. A seedy club on Cheltenham high street, filled with the loud thumping of Zane Lowe’s DJ skills [side note: I couldn’t hear anything for days after that night, it was so loud]. I’m dancing with my housemate and her university coursemates when an actual caveman catches my eye. Mostly because he’s wearing a dress, but also because he’s coming over to our group like he knows us. That’s because he knows one of us; he’s a housemate of my housemates coursemate. Try saying that after a few shots, which I had definitely had that night.
I didn’t really think that much into it. I danced, I stole his little caveman bracelet thing, I laughed at his drunken jokes, but I actually had a ‘boyfriend’ at the time. I say ‘boyfriend’ in quotes because it wasn’t an official thing with feelings or commitment… on my side, anyway. I got the feeling he was more into me than I was into him. At the end of the night, I gave the caveman a cheeky kiss on the cheek and left.
10th October 2014
The caveman messaged me (“Hi, I dunno if you remember me, but…”) having seen the photo above (which I was tagged in) on the club’s facebook page. We chatted about lots of things, but Game of Thrones mostly, which I hadn’t seen. We arranged to meet up to watch it the next week.
14th October 2014
We watched Game of Thrones at his house. In his bedroom. We did this a couple of times a week for a few weeks and I continued seeing the other guy, although I don’t know why I was carrying on with it. I didn’t like him, but I knew that I was falling in love with Chris. We kept our ‘affair’ secret as I was seeing someone else. We kept saying that we wouldn’t see each other anymore but, you know it goes… once you’re told you can’t have something, you’ve got to have it.
20th November 2014
I finally ended things with the first guy and so Chris and I professed our love to each other and lived happily ever after, basically. My housemates were hurt that I had kept this huge secret and things unfortunately weren’t the same afterwards with them. I ended up moving into Chris’s house after a couple of weeks.
31st March 2015
Chris proposed! We were in our pyjamas, watching Flabaliki on YouTube and he asked me to marry him. Obviously, I said yes. The ring was white gold with a blue topaz stone, which is my birthstone.
June 8th 2015
We moved out of Chris’s student digs and into his parents’ home near Stoke-on-Trent. I hated it with a passion, but it was only temporary. Chris started work for his dad, who owns an engineering company.
August 21st 2015
We moved into a 2-bed house in Leicester, as I was planning on going back to university there. It was freezing in that house as it was huge and we couldn’t afford heating, so Chris changed jobs twice, I looked for work, had a slight mental breakdown and started planning a cheap wedding.
January 2nd 2016
We bought Sebastian, our first pet together. He’s a corn snake!
February 8th 2016
We couldn’t afford rent in Leicester any more, so we moved into Chris’s parents’ rental property in Stoke-on-Trent, which is where we are today! Chris started to work for his dad again but with more responsibility and learning. I kept on looking for work, but was unsuccessful.
February 27th 2016
Our wedding day. We wrote our own vows and said them in front of friends and family in West Sussex, which is where I’m from. It was a perfect day, not because of the party or the food or my dress, but because I got to marry my best friend.
March 28th 2016
We bought Hazel! We also decided that we wanted to buy this house and stay in it for a couple of years before moving to somewhere more family-friendly so the mortgage savings started here.
January 12th 2017
We adopted two Guinea Pigs, called Corn Cob and Sweet Pea. They’d had multiple homes, so we couldn’t not look after them. Chris doesn’t enjoy cleaning them out, so I’ve taken on that responsibility.
June 8th 2017
We bought two kittens called Percy and Eleanor! You can see more about them in this post. They’re one of the best decisions we’ve ever made as they make us so incredibly happy.
And that’s it so far! I’ll add in our other milestones as they happen!
