Lighthearted Beauty and Lifestyle... Honestly.

I know, I know, I’m super late to the review game with this palette. I wasn’t originally going to do a review of it, as by the time I’d got mine from Beauty Bay, the whole world had already swatched and demoed it to death. But my reviews have been proving very popular of late, so another one can’t hurt, can it?!

I have to admit, I’m not Jaclyn’s biggest fan. I am subscribed, but there are a few of her videos which I can’t watch and I feel like she’s been quite shady with a few things in the past. I won’t get into details because that’s not what this post is about, but I just wanted you to know that my review isn’t bias because I’m a huge fan, or anything. I treated this palette like any Morphe palette, and this review will too.

Like most of Morphe’s other palettes, the Jaclyn Hill palette consists of 35 eyeshadows in five rows. There’s a mix of mattes and shimmers and, if you’re to believe Jaclyn’s claims (no shade), the shadows were pressed differently to the previous 35-pan palettes and are somehow better quality than usual. I’m not sure how much I trust that claim; some shadows do feel soft and good quality, but some shades felt the same as my other Morphe palettes – quite dry and not as pigmented. Unlike my other Morphe palettes, this palette cost me £37, which is very steep for a Morphe palette. I would have expected to pay £25 for the palette as it’s a collaboration, but I wasn’t expecting such a high price. However, I liked the colour selection so much that I didn’t mind stretching to that amount.

Most people who ordered the palette, even from Morphe’s own site, didn’t get a shade name sheet included and I wasn’t surprised to see that I didn’t get one either. From what I’ve read, only the first few hundred palettes included the sheet. Jaclyn recently announced that she is re-doing the packaging of her palette so that the shade names are printed on the palette itself and the outer casing is glossy rather than matte. A lot of people were angry that the original palette wasn’t ‘perfect’ like the re-release but it doesn’t bother me too much except for the fact that my palette gets extremely dirty quite quickly.

As with any palette I review, some of the shadows swatched beautifully and some needed a lot of building up and applied slightly patchy, but all of them could easily be built up for more pigment. The shimmers behaved better than the mattes (mostly), but that’s the case with any shimmer shade; mattes don’t ever swatch as well! The palette doesn’t feel like a high-end palette despite its high-end price point, but I don’t regret spending the money.

What I will say about the palette is that a few of the shades were very, very similar. The mid-brows in the first and second rows are fairly identical and the third row is also full of ‘clones’. I think the palette would have done so much better with a few more colourful shades to go with the turquoises and purples rather than a lot of the same warm shades.

This is the look I came up with! I wanted something that looked slightly editorial and definitely not something in my comfort zone (which is warm browns and oranges or reds), so I dipped into Jada in the crease, Enchanted to deepen the outer corner, Pool Party on the lid and Beam on the inner corners and that’s it. Simple yet very dramatic and bright. I have to say, I don’t think it really suits me but it was really fun to try something different. I took it quite high on the eye and towards my nose so it looked more editorial and not too 80s. Enchanted wasn’t the most pigmented or blendable, but I wanted it to be subtle anyway.

Overall, it’s a nice palette, but not anything special, especially for the price. New formula or not, there are both good and bad shades, just like any other Morphe palette. The shades are pretty and even the worst shadows will work for you with some good blending brushes and determination. It’s a good palette, nothing spectacular, but a welcome addition to my collection.
