THE BEST OF SKINCARE TAG
I’ve had this tag bookmarked for months because I was waiting until I tested out a few more products before I answered. I’m still testing out a bunch of skincare products and haven’t found my concrete ‘holy grails’ yet , but I’ve definitely found some firm favourites. Here’s the Best of Skincare tag.
1. SKIN TYPE
I’ve never really understood my skin. It’s mostly ‘Normal’ but I do have dehydrated and dry phases. I also get an oily nose, especially in this warmer weather. I also get spots on my chin all the time, so I must have some excess oil there, too. So I suppose I have combination skin – a bit of everything!
2. SKINCARE PRODUCT STORAGE
I keep my daily evening skincare routine in a large makeup bag and my morning routine with my everyday makeup on top of the acrylic drawers on my dressing table. The products I don’t use every day are kept in a drawer in my makeup drawers, along with cotton pads, baby shampoo (for cleaning brushes), hairbrushes and other random bits. I also have my daily facewashes and Real Techniques Miracle Cleansing Sponge by the sink.
3. FAVOURITE INGREDIENT
It honestly depends on what the product is for. But SPF is so important for your skin and I tend to gravitate towards products that are water-based and/or have natural ingredients. I don’t like the thought of too many chemicals on my skin – makeup is enough!
4. MOST INDULGENT PRODUCT
I get a lot of expensive skincare in my LookFantastic subscription box so it’s (basically) free, but the most indulgent skincare product that didn’t come from the BeautyBox is the Illamasqua Hydra Veil primer. This is technically a skincare product for dehydrated skin but doubles as a primer. It has a jelly-like consistency and feels so luxe and extravagant.
5. BEST BUDGET BUY
Most of my buys are budget! But I really like Garnier’s SkinActive Clarifying Tonic. It lasts for ages and is basically a miracle worker in terms of getting rid of my spots. I noticed that my spots come back when I stop using it so basically I have to buy this until I die.
6. ANY TOOLS
The only thing I use (besides cotton pads) is the Real Techniques Miracle Cleansing Sponge. I use it instead of a cloth to rinse my face and also apply my facewash. It exfoliates as I apply it and makes sure it gets really scrubbed in evenly. It causes less water spillage (anyone else HATE the feeling of water dripping down to your elbows?) and is easier to keep clean and dry.
7. BEST MASKS
I’m a mask addict and do at least one every week. I really enjoy the Garnier Moisture Bomb sheet masks for a cheap way to get intense hydration. I prefer sheet masks over rinse-off or peel-off masks is they’re less messy and I feel like my skin gets the most benefit from them. I tried a sheet mask from LookFantastic the other day which made my skin so shiny and healthy-looking but it was too expensive to buy.
8. BEST MULTI-USE
A recent purchase of mine is the Vitamin E Hydrating Mist from Superdrug. It’s a Mac Fix+ dupe so you can use it for so many different things: wetting brushes and sponges, refreshing your makeup to remove cakeface, giving you a dewy finish, hydrating or soothing your skin, diluting liquid formulas (such as foundation), thinning out thicker products (like gel liner), plus it has so many vitamins and natural ingredients so you know it’s good for you, too.
9. FAVOURITE BRAND
This is a difficult one, as I don’t own any full collections. I like a lot of brands for different things: The Neutrogena moisturisers are great, Garnier SkinActive products work well, The Ordinary are brilliant for chemical-based products, The Body Shop have some beautiful products that work… I like to have a variety of different products to try for when my skin needs different things. I’m still in search for my perfect routine, after all!
10. BEST SPOT TREATMENT
For me, it’s the Garnier Clarifying Tonic. But The Body Shop have a Tea Tree range which is amazing for clearing breakouts and acne. It does dry out your skin so getting moisture from other products is necessary, but it’s well worth a go if you can’t shift your spots.
11. FAVOURITE ROUTINE STEP
I like serums! They generally have a nicer texture than the other products and it feels so ‘extra’ compared to cleanser or moisturiser. My current favourite is the SkinChemists Aqua Repair serum; it has a beautiful scent and feel to it. I also like the Vitamin E serum too, which is in Superdrug. I think serums can really make the difference between good and great skin.
12. SKINCARE WISH LIST
I’d love to try some high-end skincare – Clarins and Clinique is on the list – to see if cheaper ingredients can recreate the same effect as more expensive ones. I’d like to try some products from Dermatologica and Deciem as well. Caudalie is another one I’d like to grab some bits from, as I love their VineActiv 3-in-1 moisturiser.
