UPDATE: YOUTUBE & BLOG GOALS / 2017
Edit: I found this post whilst going through some old posts – to check for dead links, etcetera – and thought it might be interesting to see if I actually achieved some of my 2017 goals. I’m hoping I did, otherwise I’m going to be quite depressed. To make things easier, the original text is in normal font, and my ‘modern additions’ will be in italics. For reference, this was published on the 13th Jan 2017 and edited on 04th April 2018.
You’ve seen my 2017 resolutions post (maybe) but I thought I’d go into some more detail about my specific blog and youtube goals!
For reference, I started the blog on 1st August 2016 and Youtube (properly) on October 1st 2016!
I started off the year at 395 youtube subscribers and 355 wordpress followers (not including email subscribers) and by the end of 2017 I’d like to be on at least 1500 youtube subs and 1000 wordpress followers. I’d also like to grow my email subscriber number as well but I haven’t focused on that yet, so I’m not 100% sure what my goal will/should be. I will be making sure to do some research and update you on how to grow your email subscriber base (if I find out).
I believe I achieved both of these goals. I think I was nearer 1900 subscribers by the end of 2017 and on 1200 wordpress followers. Now that I’m self-hosting, I haven’t gained any WordPress followers since then, though. I gained a few email subscribers but probably not as many as I had originally hoped.
I began 2017 with just under 20k video views on youtube and over 16k hits on wordpress which I’m really proud of. By the end of 2017 I’d like 100k video views and 75k blog hits. Obviously as followers go up, views tend to ‘snowball’ a bit so it’s really difficult to estimate but I’d like at least those numbers. Again, I’ll be doing research on growing the number of blog visitors.
I smashed my goals! I had around 200,000 views on YouTube and 100,000 blog hits. When I went self-hosted my counter reset to zero, so I’m not 100% sure of the figure but I know it was around 100k.
I’m not going to reveal my blogging income or adsense balance for obvious reasons but I would like to be earning regularly by the end of the year, where through affiliate links, sponsored content or advertising.
By regularly, I think I meant every single month. Unfortunately it’s more like every 3-4 months and since the adpocolypse happened I’m not earning as much as I used to.
Obviously I’m always learning and growing and improving but I really want to make my blog more beautiful and more professional. I also want to be able to make better videos. Part of this is by buying a new camera, lighting and getting better at photography/editing. When I start posting five times a week on the blog (from March) I should be able to up my quality naturally as well, as I have slightly more time to focus on making each post.
I got a new camera and lighting setup and I think my quality has probably improved as I’ve continued to make content. I will let you be the judges of that!
Collabs are pretty crucial if you want to grow your blog/channel and become more active in the blogging and youtube community. Not only does it open you up to more followers from your collab partner’s following, but it shows you’re serious about what you do and want to connect with other people! I want to collab at least three times on youtube and wordpress this year.
I collabed with four or five people in 2017 on YouTube! I haven’t done any in 2018 yet. I think I need to make this a goal for this year, too.
I want to make the blog into a .com at some point in the year and also change the blog name before that. I’m currently looking through ideas… after I do that, I will probably create a blog post titled something like ‘how to host your own wordpress blog’ so I can help other bloggers wanting to take the same path as me. I also need to be more active on social media. I try to post at least once a day on both instagrams, facebook, twitter and snapchat but life often gets in the way.
I did make the blog into hollifeblog.com. And then into hollife.co.uk, so that’s one goal checked off the list. I didn’t write a ‘how to host your own blog’ post, because I honestly know nothing about self-hosting. I have to email my hosting provider so often to ask questions! I think I’m pretty active on Instagram and Twitter nowadays, but I never post on Facebook and Snapchat because those platforms are pretty much cancelled.
So, those are my big goals for 2017. I do have mini goals each month which I write in my planner, so keep an eye out on youtube for videos where I show that.
I do think I achieved my goals as a whole for 2017, but for 2018 things have changed – I’m self-hosted, which means less followers but more hits, my subscriber count on YouTube has grown so things are slightly different, and my priorities have changed. I’m pretty happy with how things went in 2017, let’s hope 2018 is just as successful.
