Lighthearted Beauty and Lifestyle... Honestly.

The sun is shining (well, sometimes) and we still have at least a month of summer left – if you can call this cloudiness summer – so dewy skin is very much high on the makeup agenda. Glowy, healthy-looking skin is always on-trend and summer is the perfect time to show off your natural radiance. But what if you don’t have any? In this post, I tell you how you can create and fake it for those all-important summer Instagram snaps.

guide to instagram glowy skin | skincare and highlight

Glowy skin starts with your skincare routine. Choose products that boast hydration, radiance and a healthy complexion, such as the Caudalie Radiance Serum or the Brightening Essence. If you suffer with dry skin, moisturisers with ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid or Coconut Oil and aqua-based products will help with clearing up that dryness that can halt the glow in its tracks. Keep your skin moisturised, toned and refreshed each day to achieve a natural shine.

That almost 3D shine you see on those Insta-models? It’s most likely sweat, if it’s not facetune. Work out, or simply turn off the A/C for a bit and the shine on your face will be au natural. Perfect for a quick pic, before a cool shower. Make sure to use an SPF if you’re going out in the sun (premature ageing isn’t fun) and drink plenty of water to re-hydrate yourself after sweating.

If you haven’t seen my blog post about Strobing, now would be the time to read that. Invest in a strobe cream for mixing into foundation or primer for an all-over glow, or dab it onto the high points of your face for that Instagram-worthy shine. Top it off with powder highlight for an insane glow that would make NikkieTutorials jealous. There’s some options for both high-end and affordable strobing liquids in the aforementioned blog post about strobing!

Finally, edit your photo to accentuate the highlights (literally) and up the contrast to show off the glow. You can either use Instagram’s own photo editing capabilities or download a free app like Snapseed to edit before you post. When taking the photo, face the light (so either the sun or a window) for maximum light and move your face around in different positions, taking multiple pictures so you can choose the one with the best lighting later on. And remember that a lot of ‘Grammers will be editing their photos with apps that make their skin look flawless, their jawline completely smooth and their highlight brighter than their future, so don’t despair if you can’t recreate a look completely – it is most likely edited!

So, hopefully you’re fully prepped and ready for those Instagram snaps where you want your skin to look as glowy as possible – make sure to tag me in your pics when you upload them (my Insta is @hollife) so I can give it a like and you a follow! Just remember that a tonne of highlight or skin gloss might not be the everyday summer look you were hoping for; there’s no perfect lighting and filters in the real world so it you may not get the same effect outside as you did on social media, but know that you are still rocking that highlight like the queen you are!
